The Problematic Nature Of Unemployment In Our Contemporary Society And Self-Reliance (Entrepreneurial Programmes) Concept As The Panacia
The
problem of unemployment in Nigeria has necessitated the ongoing contemporary
resilient resourcefulness in the average Nigerian, who must do something to
earn a living in a world where utilities, social and economic infrastructure
have been destroyed. Unemployment, the substantial bedrock of this particular
blog page, is defined as “a situation in which people who are willing to work
at a prevailing wage rate, are unable to find jobs” (Gbosi, 2006).
These set of people are defined by bureau of
labor statistics as “people who are jobless, looking for jobs, and available
for work” (custom essay). Nigeria as
a nation, has the potential for both economic growth and development though the
economic performance of the country has been described as erratic, dismal,
truncated and largely unimpressed (Ajayi et al,2002).The foregoing contending
facts are prevalent in the present state of the Nigerian society. Such individuals have a right to receive
temporary financial assistance from the government but the reverse is the case
in Nigerian system (faced with the incident of graduates/youth unemployment,
inflation, poverty, increasing crime rates, environmental pollution, etc).
Consequently,
the purpose of this particular blogpost is to focus on self-reliance as a turnaround
therapy that will foster its curative measure if we as the youths to whom the
contemporary realities beckon to, heed to taking the pill. Ralph Waldo Emerson,
(1803-1882); a man who authored an essay that calls for staunch individualism
“Self reliance” as the essay is entitled, analyzed the nature of the
“aboriginal self on which a universal reliance may be grounded”
(Wikipedia). For him he felt that there
was a presence of dialectic in the world between good and evil and that it is
each person’s individual goal to break free from this to heighten their inner
self. His speeches especially the ones borne in the 40s mainly attacked
dependence on continental thought. From this premise, it stands that though
Nigeria is independent, the people that constitute the citizens are very much
distanced from such ideology, especially, the youths with the experience of
unemployment.
Drawing from the experience that America had which was stated in an article entitled “out of panic”(posted by Harold Bloom in October 11,2008 in the New York Times) which holds that a great depression afflicted the northeastern United States in 1837, making half of about 850 banks fold up followed by high unemployment. This same experience shared within, motivated the idea of Self Reliance that basically formed the premise of Ralph Waldo’s reaction to such depressive period which I believe is facing Nigeria as a nation.
