The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU had on Friday issued a communique, giving the union a one-week ultimatum to get back to the government on the strike action. This was disclosed to the journalists by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige who said the government had pledged itself to the contentious issues raised by the union. In a further statement,it reads thus “To remind you, some of them are the funding of universities, earned academic allowances, staff schools, salary shortfalls, the issue of the Treasury Single Account among others. Most of these issues stem from the 2009 agreement and the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding that the government had with ASUU. However, he stated that “Government is a continuum. Most of these issues did not crop up during the Buhari administration. We inherited them. On his address at the convocation arena in Abraka, the vice-chancellor of delsu disclosed that a total of 5,811 students graduated under its bachelor degree programs in the 2014/2015 session among which 24 graduates got first class whereas 1,123 bagged second class upper while 3,222 made lower division. He also made it known that 47 PhDs, 431 Masters, 243 Post graduates Diploma and about 485 with diploma certificates were produced. It was further confirmed that the students were found worthy in both character and learning. Notably, mr Marcus Ifeanyi of the Department of Mathematics is said to have bagged First class Honor with 4.86 cumulative grade point aggregate.  

There is this ugly phenomenon that has continued to occur for such a long time now and needs to be stopped. University of Portharcourt had a protest in regard to the continuous increment in student school fees and instead of the management adhering to their request they reverted to an option that sent her students to their early grave. This is not news but an issue that calls for attention of every human right activist because this is getting out of hand. NB : Not so long we had the demise of one of our beloved great student in the person of Kelechi now this is a fresh story not even to recall how four boys were lured to death some years ago. I must confess that finishing school is really a big task and moving to the next stage of your life is another scary situation. Sometimes it appears exciting when you think of how much free-time you will have for yourself. It becomes scary when you think of all the expectations that are before you.  At this point in time you will no longer be at the ease of the receiving end rather you will be faced with a reversed situation where people would demand from you.  These may even include financial demand/ support or something of that nature owing to the notion folks may have imbibed of somebody being a graduate. Being a graduate as a matter of fact is the hardest as well as the most challenging/changing phase of your life. I choose to say it this way and its good we face facts because there are even more tasks to accomplish at this level of your life. No matter how well someone has prepared, only the thought of it gets us thinking and what we do at this point in time is trying to get tactful or rather some accumulated knowledge within us regurgitated.
